Autism: The importance of the correct narrative.

Why do we buy into this narrative?
There is nothing special, unique or remarkable about Autism.

The fact that our children teach us to be better people is unarguably character building, but not something we couldn't learn otherwise. Yes, kids with Autism tend to be unique but so are other children.

This idea of glorifying the condition as character building, while we raise special little people is detrimental to their future well being. How we see our children with Autism becomes their view of themselves. And while I may see my son as special, the rest of the world may not.

Would it not serve our kids better, to explain their shortcomings and help them learn the skills to improve?

My son is not remarkable because Autism made him so. He is remarkable because he learned the skills he needs to adapt and survive.
